So... I got laid off.

If you had told me a year ago that I’d be sitting here writing a blog post about being laid off, I probably would have laughed. Yet, here I am, navigating an unexpected career transition after my time at the Florida Sports Foundation came to an end.
It’s a surreal feeling. One moment, you’re pouring your energy into the projects and campaigns you’ve worked so hard to build, and the next, you’re handed a curveball you never saw coming. But, as anyone who’s been part of the sports world knows, life isn’t just about how you play the game—it’s about how you adapt to the unexpected plays that come your way. And trust me, sports have taught me plenty about handling the unexpected.
Repurposing My Wins
One of the first things I did after being laid off was revisit the video I created for Destinations International’s 30 Under 30 program. At the time, that video was a celebration of where I was in my career and the impact I’d made in sports tourism. Now, it’s become part of a new narrative—a key piece of my portfolio that showcases the value I bring to the table. Repurposing that video felt a little bittersweet, but it also reminded me of something crucial: just because I’ve been sidelined doesn’t mean I’m out of the game.
As I added the video to my FSF portfolio, I took a moment to reflect on what it represents. It’s not just a highlight reel; it’s a testament to the dedication, creativity, and passion I bring to my work. It’s proof that I’ve made an impact, and it’s a tool I can use to open doors to my next opportunity.
Lessons from Sports
Sports have always been a big part of my life, both personally and professionally. And as I navigate this transition period, I’ve been reflecting on the invaluable lessons sports have taught me:
Adaptability: In sports, the game can change in an instant. One second, you’re executing a perfectly planned play; the next, you’re scrambling to recover after a turnover. Being laid off felt like one of those moments, but just like in sports, I’m learning to adapt. Whether it’s updating my portfolio, networking, or exploring new career paths, I’m embracing the need to stay flexible and open-minded.
Grit: If there’s one thing sports have taught me, it’s that you’ve got to dig deep when the going gets tough. Losing my job was a blow, but it’s not the end of the story. I’m determined to keep pushing forward, even on the days when it feels hard. Because grit isn’t just about enduring—it’s about thriving in the face of adversity.
The Power of Teamwork: In sports, no one succeeds alone. Whether it’s a teammate, a coach, or a mentor, we all rely on others to help us reach our goals. During this time, I’ve leaned on my network—friends, colleagues, and mentors—for support, advice, and opportunities. Their encouragement reminds me that I’m not in this alone.
Relentless Determination: In sports, you play until the final whistle, no matter what the scoreboard says. That same relentless determination is driving me now. I’m staying focused, keeping my eyes on the prize, and refusing to let this setback define me.
What’s Next?
With that said, BALL UP TOP! 🏀 This isn’t the end of my story; it’s just a new chapter.
I don’t know exactly what’s next, but I do know this: I’m embracing the hustle, staying ready, and keeping my heart open to whatever opportunities come my way. Whether it’s creating unforgettable experiences for fans, driving brand engagement, or championing the power of sports to build communities, I’m ready to make my next big play.
So, here’s to the journey ahead. Here’s to staying focused, working hard, and never losing sight of what matters most. And here’s to anyone else who’s navigating a transition—remember, every setback is just a setup for a comeback.
Let’s get it. 💪🏾
